\u00cele du Massacre, \u00cele aux Amours and \u00cele Br\u00fbl\u00e9e: <\/b>Visiting these islands is an absolute must during your Rimouski trip.<\/span><\/p>\n

A RICH HISTORY<\/span><\/h4>\n

In colonial times, the \u00cele du Bic served as a <\/span>landmark for navigators<\/b> exploring the St. Lawrence River. The <\/span>French <\/b>settled on the island in the <\/span>17<\/b>th<\/b> century<\/b>. The island was an important <\/span>communication base<\/b> between the various outposts in the region and came to play a large role in the Anglo-French War.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the 19th-century, some explorers built houses on \u00cele du Bic. The harsh waters surrounding the island were the site of <\/span>numerous shipwrecks<\/b>\u2014nearly <\/span>20 wrecks<\/b> in all. <\/span><\/p>\n

Despite its rich contributions to <\/span>Le Bic\u2019s history<\/span><\/a>, the island is currently entirely uninhabited\u2026except for the scores of <\/span>seals<\/b>!<\/span><\/p>\n

DIVERSE FLORA AND FAUNA<\/span><\/h4>\n

Its rich geography makes \u00cele du Bic the perfect home for <\/span>a wide range of animals<\/b>. You can find many seals lurking about, as well as a number of birds and small mammals similar to the <\/span>animals in the Parc National du Bic<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ceLE BICQUETTE<\/span><\/h4>\n

Also known as \u00celot du Bicquet, this little island is located off the coast of the much larger \u00cele du Bic. In <\/span>1844, <\/b>a <\/span>lighthouse <\/b>was built on the island to <\/span>guide navigators<\/b> around its hostile, rocky shore. Several <\/span>cannons<\/b> were also set up to protect the island.<\/span><\/p>\n

Like the \u00cele du Bic, the \u00cele Bicquette was the site of numerous conflicts and shipwrecks. Today, the island is <\/span>closed to all<\/b> visitors <\/b>without prior authorization, in order to protect its wildlife.<\/span><\/p>\n

And boy does this island have wildlife! More than <\/span>12,000 <\/b>common eiders<\/b> come to the island each year for <\/span>breeding season<\/b>. Not to mention the other birds, seals, fish and small mammals that call \u00cele Bicquette home.<\/span><\/p>\n

THE ISLANDS OF PARC NATIONAL DU BIC<\/span><\/h3>\n

Near Parc national du Bic and <\/span>Havre du Bic <\/b>(Bic Harbour), you\u2019ll find the three small islands: \u00cele aux Amours, \u00cele Br\u00fbl\u00e9e and \u00cele du Massacre. <\/span>Visible from the coast<\/b>, each island has its own unique history and landscape.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ceLE AUX AMOURS<\/span><\/h4>\n

Located in the middle of Havre du Bic, the \u00cele aux Amours has a rich <\/span>indigenous <\/b>history. An indigenous family settled on the island in as early as <\/span>1550.<\/b> Much later, in the <\/span>1950s<\/b>, an <\/span>inn<\/b> was built on the island. \u00cele aux Amours is shrouded in <\/span>mystery and legend<\/b>, making it hard to unravel the truth behind its name.<\/span><\/p>\n

Legend has it that the many couples who came to stay at the inn would <\/span>stroll hand in hand along the coastline<\/b>, earning it the <\/span>name<\/b> \u201cl\u2019\u00cele aux Amours\u201d (Lovers\u2019 Island).<\/span><\/p>\n

You can reach the \u00cele aux Amours by <\/span>kayak <\/b>or by <\/span>foot at low <\/b>tide from the Parc national du Bic. Set aside an hour to explore the <\/span>hiking trails<\/span><\/a> on the island.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ceLE DU MASSACRE<\/span><\/h4>\n

Known for its <\/span>tragic history<\/b>, the \u00cele du Massacre is named after the. <\/span>Mi\u2019kmaq Massacre<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to <\/span>Jacques Cartier <\/b>himself, in <\/span>1533<\/b>, some fifty families from the nomadic Mi\u2019kmaq tribe ventured into what is now the Parc national du Bic to find food. There they encountered the <\/span>Iroquois<\/b>, who then chased the Mi\u2019kmaq to <\/span>\u00cele du Massacre<\/b>, where they took refuge. The Iroquois found the Mi\u2019kmaq hiding in a cave and massacred them, women and children included. Of the <\/span>nearly 200 Mi\u2019kmaq<\/b> on the island, <\/span>only 5 managed to escape<\/b> the massacre.<\/span><\/p>\n

The truth behind this story is still <\/span>contested <\/b>today. Some question the numbers, others debate whether the Mi\u2019kmaq were ill-intentioned. There\u2019s even claims that the massacre actually took place on <\/span>\u00cesle-Verte.<\/b><\/p>\n

Nowadays \u00cele du Massacre is <\/span>uninhabited<\/b>. You can <\/span>reach it by foot at low tide,<\/b> and it\u2019s possible to walk the length of the island.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00ceLE BR\u00dbL\u00c9E<\/span><\/h4>\n

The \u00cele Br\u00fbl\u00e9e is located just beyond the \u00cele du Massacre, a little further offshore. It is said to take its name (\u201cBurnt Island\u201d) from a <\/span>fire that ravaged it<\/b> long ago. The island has since been restored to its former glory, however. Today, you can explore the <\/span>wild and dense vegetation<\/b> that it\u2019s known for.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can reach the \u00cele Br\u00fbl\u00e9e by <\/span>sea kayak<\/span><\/a> and soak in its stunning sunsets over the bay!<\/span><\/p>\n
