AN INTRODUCTION TO ICE FISHING<\/span><\/h3>\n

First Nations and Inuit<\/b> in the region have been ice fishing for centuries, and French settlers adopted the practice when they came to Quebec.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ice fishing on the region\u2019s lakes and rivers requires <\/span>ice that is thick enough<\/b> to walk on (around <\/span>20 to 30 cm<\/b>) and <\/span>particular preparation<\/b>. You\u2019ll need to<\/span> make a hole in the ice<\/b> using an auger or a sharpened metal bar. Once the hole is ready, the ice fishing can begin!<\/span><\/p>\n

To <\/span>catch fish under the ice<\/b>, lower a fishing line with one or two <\/span>hooks<\/b> through the hole. Select your bait according to the type of fish you want to catch, and shake your fishing rod gently to attract them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Contrary to what you might think, there are many fish living under the ice in winter. The most common species found under the ice in Rimouski is <\/span>rainbow smelt<\/b>. Other species such as <\/span>Atlantic tomcod<\/b> and <\/span>rockfish<\/b> can be found <\/span>in the St. Lawrence River<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n
